Inuits of Greenland: An Adaptive Society In a world far different from our own in the Northern Hemisphere lies an indigenous society known as the Inuits. Specifically focusing on the Inuits of Greenland these people have adopted various risk management strategies which has enabled them to survive in a harsh arctic environment. In indigenous cultures, their well-being and sustainability is managed through control of population growth like most present day indigenous societies have been influenced by western ideas and technologies, in which some of these influences have been beneficial while other western influences have threatened their traditional way of life. The Inuits or â€Å"Kalaallit† are the native people of Greenland, they have lived there for almost one thousand years. Today Greenland’s population is around 55,000, 85 percent of whom are Inuit (Caulfield:1997,1). The national language is Greenlandic, which is an branch of Inupik, or Eskimo language. There are three dialects according to the region in which they are spoken, such as West Greenlandic, East Greenlandic and Polar-Eskimo. Hunting, along with fishing is fundamental to their livelihood. Today, the Inuits are highly dependent on traditional methods of obtaining food through hunting and fishing. Inuits were first introduced to Westerners in the Thirteenth century. The encounters began between the Norse colonists on Western shore and Inuit hunters. During the 17th and 18th centuries, traders returned to Europe with many artifacts from the Inuits. They also took these indigenous people as slaves, stolen from their native land to be put on display. The Inuits were viewed as heavy but happy people surviving in a rough environment. Article Summary Sex is a God given gift, to form and multiply in a way that’s honorable to Him. When used unwisely there can be serious consequences such as unwanted pregnancies, and STI’s (sexual transmitted infections). In today’s society sex is portrayed a simple factor in life that has no repercussions or consequences when misused.From the television shows, to Internet, to even the commercials placed, sex sells and rapidly is increasing into the norm of everyday society. Exposing sex to youth at an early age can cause emotional depression, physical malfunctions, and the wrong outlook on life both mentally and spiritually. The article reviews that parents that converse with their children more freely and openly are less likely to experiment sexual intercourse at a younger age. Many parents believe that hiding or not placing an awareness about sex t o their children will make them less likely to have sex when in fact it increases their chances greatly. Also youth that are active in school with extra curricular activities such as being in sports teams aren’t quite too exposed to sex, compared to a child that goes straight home after classes turns on the TV everyday.Having their minds filled with academics along with extra curricular activities leaves for a balance and non – acquaintance with sex. Early sexual contact can also depend on a child’s environment. Raising a child around drugs, crime and violence can increase the likelihood of having unprotected sex with others. Schools now are beginning to administer mandatory sex education classes with students as early as freshman in high school. Enforcing this behavior would benefit for decreasing early sexual activity and furthermore raising knowledge for STI’s (sexual transmitted infections), the causes and affects of diseases.Thoughts of early sexual exposure to youth as a Social problem As the years progress, sex is becoming a socially accepted norm. Teens who see and hear a lot about sex in the media may be more than twice as likely to have early sexual intercourse as those who are rarely exposed to sexual content. A new study shows that 12- to 14-year-olds exposed to the most sexual content in movies, music, magazines, and on television were 2. 2 times more likely to have had sexual intercourse. Teens are still at a stage mentally were there’s still room for improvement.Corrupting it at a young age can lead to many negative affects such as rebellion against family, delinquency, and mental instability. In most cases when teens are going through puberty, they feel the need and compression to fit in, and chances are people around them are becoming sexually active by peer pressure all around them. As a young teen in high school I had no common knowledge of sex. Coming from a single parent home my mother and I didn’t have the closest relationship, so a conversation about sex was never brought up.The information was only gained through friends, associates and a few close family members, which wasn’t the best possible thing to do. If my relationship were closer to my mom I would have approached her about it, but my curiosity lead me to seek other options from other people. Females like myself with just a single parent in the home like a mom; we usually seek a male figure for the lack of one not being in the home. Sex is usually acted upon earlier, for the fact of a lack of attention.They get too attach easily since they are being displayed affection whether or not it’s emotionally or physically. Many times when these decisions are made they are based off of temporary emotion that can affect you in a permanent way, for example early pregnancy. Christian Worldview When combining a strong faith it’s always best to place scripture with growth and temptations of this world. Famili es that raise more awareness and concern when comparing everyday scenarios with scripture can help youth in the family have a better understanding.Reading scripture daily with family causes for expansion of wisdom and can help for better decision making when coming to teen and early sexual exposure. Sex was originally made by God to share between husband and wife with intentions of multiply, and bringing in life to this world. Today sex has lost its initial meaning, people are abusing God’s gift by using it for just selfish temporary pleasures. Sex before marriage is only breaking the covenant between man and God to remain pure for your husband and wife.We are so caught up in what the world has to offer that we lose focus on God and his message about sex. Purposely abusing sex for self-interested intentions is in a way cursing God and saying that He’s not important and the word being offered has no relevance to their lives. While God was on earth he sacrificed plenty f or us mentally, spiritually and emotionally. The least we can do is return that unconditional love back to Him. How A Roller Coaster Works Free Online Research Papers Roller Coasters originated from the ice slides built in Russia during the 1400’s, today we see these large structures at Amusement parks across the country. Some roller coasters are those large steel or wooden structures that people like to sit in a cart or car going up and down the humps and hills giving them a thrill of a ride. The ride may not last all that long, but for some the time seems forever when you are quite scared and your stomach seems to be caught up in your throat. Many of us may or may not want to know exactly how a roller coaster works, because we may not want to ride one again. For some, the understanding of â€Å"How does a roller coaster work?† is thrilling in itself. Let’s use physics to further understand this exciting ride. You may or may not know this, but as your cruising down the roller coaster structure at a high speed of 50-60 miles per hour, there is no engine. Let me further explain. The train of cars is initially taken up the lift hill or the first hill by a chain. The energy flows from the electric field (the space surrounding an electric charge) into the mechanical turning of the motor driving the chain. The chain lifts the cars; the kinetic energy of the motion of the chain is given to the train. This energy, in turn, flows into the gravitational field (the force field that describes the acceleration of gravity in a region of space) while the coaster makes it way to the highest point or top of the roller coaster structure, then the chain disengages. The train is moving quite slow at this point. Its maximum energy for this ride is stored in the gravitational field. Eventually, the train of cars will begin to fall, the kinetic energy (motion of the train of cars) increases as the gravitational potential (gravitational field) energy decreases. As the train of cars hit the bottom of the first hump or hill, the velocity and the kinetic energy are the greatest and the gravitational energy is spent. Inertia is what takes the train cars though the rest of the track. The weight of the train car is what gives it inertia. Without that it would not have any speed to get up the next hill this is sometimes known as momentum. As the train of cars climbs the next hill, most of the kinetic energy is transferred to the gravitational field. The velocity decreases. This continues for some time. There is friction, wind resistance, track friction causing some thermal heating along the way. All the humps or hills after the first one are successively shorter. Ultimately the gravitational and kinetic energies used at the top of the lift hill move into thermal energy by the end of the ride. This energy is no longer available to roller coaster system. Roller coasters are really heaters, allowing for the flow of electrical energy into heat, by way of kinetic energy and the gravitational field. We mentioned there are two types of roller coasters, wooden structures and steel coasters. You will usually see wooden coasters with no looping. They are also not as tall and fast as steel coasters. Wooden coasters do offer one advantage to the roller coaster junkie; they sway lot more than steel structures. Steel coasters allow for a bit more creative designing of loops, steeper hills and the exciting drops, rolls and of course the speed. There does happen to be wheels on the train cars and they do have a huge part in the success of your roller coaster ride too. There are several different types of wheels to help keep the ride smooth. Basically, there are three sets of wheels, top, bottom and side. The top wheels are referred to as the rollers, the bottom wheels are the up-stop and the side wheels are the guides, assisting in the moving from side to side or swaying of the cars. The wheels can be made out of several different materials, including steel and neoprene. If plastics are used, the coaster is electrically grounded just before it goes through proximity sensors. This will keep the sensors from shorting out. In addition, we need to be concerned with the braking system. Yes, there is a braking system designed with a roller coaster. The common one has a fin of steel hanging from the center of each train car. The brake pads are between the tracks. As the fin passes through the pads, the fins are squeezed to slow the train. When the pads are open, the train of cars moves freely through the track. Roller coasters overall are quite simple in how they operate, but there is much more to make the ride as thrilling as possible for the many patrons and roller coaster junkies that ride them.
